Wayne State University Statutes
| 2.43.01 | Academic Programs |
| 2.43.01.010 | Purpose |
| It is the purpose of this statute to define and reserve to the Board of Governors the authority to approve those actions relating to academic programs which constitute policy commitments, while also defining the President's full executive authority to make operational academic program decisions. The statute shall be interpreted in light of this purpose. An academic program is defined as any combination of courses leading to a degree or free-standing certificate, or to a major, co-major, or other designation which appears on the diploma, certificate, or transcript. A free-standing certificate is any certificate which can be earned through a prescribed course of credit study and that can be pursued independent of and without enrollment in any other certificate or degree program. |
|
| 2.43.01.020 | Reserved Authority |
| The Board of Governors reserves solely to itself the authority to (1) establish, consolidate, or terminate degrees and free-standing certificates; (2) establish the principal requirements for earning degrees; (3) establish the requirements for the award of all academic honors which are noted on the diploma or transcript; and (4) establish, consolidate, or terminate majors, co-majors, curricula, or other program designations which appear on the transcript or diploma and/or which lead to a degree or free-standing certificate. | |
| 2.43.01.030 | Presidential Authority |
| The Board of Governors delegates to the President the authority to make and approve all other academic program actions. | |
| 2.43.01.040 | Subdelegation of Authority |
| The Board of Governors authorizes the President to subdelegate the authority vested in him/her by this statute. No authority whatsoever is vested in any person to exercise any of the authority granted by the Board of Governors to the President except pursuant to a specific subdelegation by the President. The President shall report subdelegations of authority under this statute to the Board of Governors for its information. | |
| 2.43.01.050 | Faculty Responsibilities |
| Nothing in this statute alters the responsibilities of the faculties of the Universities with respect to academic programs, as set forth in sections 2.22.01, 2.23.01, or 2.26.04 of the statutes. | |
| 2.43.01.060 | Award of Degrees and Free-Standing Certificates |
| The authority to award degrees and free-standing certificates is vested by the people of Michigan, through the Constitution of this State, in the Board of Governors of Wayne State University. The Board of Governors delegates to the President the authority to award degrees and free-standing certificates, after seeking the recommendation of the faculties of the colleges, schools, or other academic entities authorized by the Board of Governors to offer those academic programs. | |
