Governor Richard Bernstein works as a trial attorney, representing victims of personal injury or disability discrimination. He also is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Currently, he is Vice-Chair of the Wayne State BOG.

Governor Bernstein graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to earn a Juris Doctor degree from the Northwestern University School of Law.

Public service is an important part of Governor Bernstein's life. He created and hosts the CBS-Detroit television segment called "Making a Difference," which highlights exemplary community service programs.

Respected news outlets, regionally and nationally, have recognized him for his exemplary leadership and service. He was featured on CNN as a leader in “Keeping Them Honest,” was honored by the Detroit News as a “Michiganian of the Year” and was selected by Crain’s Detroit Business as one of “40 Under 40.”

In recognition of his advocacy on behalf of those in need, Governor Bernstein received the following honors:
  • Regeana Myrick Outstanding Young Lawyer Award, State Bar of Michigan.
  • Spirit of Detroit Award - Detroit City Council.
  • Special Recognition Award, Macomb Intermediate School District.
  • Children's Advocate Award, National Council of Jewish Women.
  • Volunteer of the Year, Jewish Home and Aging Services.
  • Activist of the Year Award, Jewish Community Relations Council
Personally, Governor Bernstein is an avid runner, having completed seven marathons. In recognitions of his accomplishments as a blind athlete, he has received the Rick Knas Lifetime Achievement Award from the Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame, and was also the recipient of an Outstanding Leadership Award from the Achilles Track Organization.
