Principles and Process of the Search

Principles

  1. The Board of Governors (BOG) has begun a search for the next president of Wayne State University (WSU).
  2. The WSU BOG retains its full authority, under the constitution of the State of Michigan, to elect a president from finalists determined by the search committee or from other means the BOG should determine.
  3. The search committee shall include individuals appointed by the BOG and will represent the offices and constituencies at Wayne State University. This search committee will work with a search firm to recommend to the BOG a prospective pool of candidates for consideration.
  4. The chair of the Presidential Search Committee shall be the chair of the Board of Governors. BOG members on the search committee shall also include Marilyn Kelly, Shirley Stancato, and Michael Busuito.

Process

  1. A professional search firm experienced in higher education will be chosen by the BOG though the university's RFP process.
  2. Candidate interviews are expected to begin in or around January 2023.
  3. On behalf of the BOG, the university will establish a website for communicating with students, faculty, staff, and the general public. Comments and advice shall be solicited on that site.
  4. At least four feedback sessions will be held in October and November 2022. These will be co-hosted by the BOG and partner groups on campus. The proceedings will be filmed and the recordings made available on the presidential search website whenever possible.
  5. A lead staff assistant shall be an ex-officio member of the committee without vote, will take notes of the meetings of the committee, and perform other functions as the chair shall designate.
    1. Rebecca Journigan, director of operations, from the division of Academic Student Affairs and Global Engagement, has been appointed to this position.
  6. The process will include the following steps:
    1. September: search firm RFP.
    2. October: BOG selects search firm.
    3. October/November: four feedback sessions occur.
    4. October/November: Search committee is appointed by the BOG.
    5. October/November: First meeting of the search committee.
    6. November/December: discussions between the search firm and the search committee, as well as between university officials and the BOG with the search firm. Process details, the presidential selection criteria, and other items will be determined.
    7. December: search firm begins solicitations.
    8. January 2023: initial candidate interviews begin.
    9. January/February/March: candidate interviews with the search committee continue. At the end of process, finalists are advanced to BOG.
    10. March/April: full BOG meets and interviews finalists.
    11. May: proposed deadline for BOG to choose candidate.
