2.34.12 Admissions; Graduate

2.34.12.010 General Admission Standards for Graduate Study
  To be admitted to graduate study, an applicant must, except as provided in Section 2.34.12.020, hold or be completing an earned baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from a college or university accredited by a recognized national or regional accrediting agency in the United States and must have adequate preparation in and discernible ability to pursue graduate studies in the major field elected.
2.34.12.020  
  An applicant who has not pursued studies in a college or university accredited by a recognized national or regional accrediting agency in the United States may be considered for regular admission if he/she presents an Honor Point Average of 3.0 (B) or better, or its equivalent in the case of a student who has studied outside the United States, for the upper division studies (approximately the last 60 semester credit hours) or his/her undergraduate course work.
2.34.12.030  
  In addition to the admissions requirements in Sections 2.34.12.010 and 2.34.12.020, an applicant for regular admission to graduate study must demonstrate proficiency in English by satisfying one of the following criteria:
2.34.12.040  
  Complete a baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution in the United States or at an institution where English is the medium of instruction.
2.34.12.045
  • Successful completion of the highest level of the Wayne State University English Language Institute (ELI) program.
2.34.12.050  
  Present an acceptable score on the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB).
2.34.12.060  
  Present an acceptable score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
2.34.12.070 Admission for Master's Degree Studies
  All applicants for admission to master's degree study must meet the requirements of Sections 2.34.12.010 through 2.34.12.060.
2.34.12.080  
 

Regular admission. For regular admission to master's degree study, an applicant shall obtain the recommendation of the major departmental advisor or the graduate officer of the appropriate school or college and present an Honor Point Average of 2.75 (C = 2.0) or better, or its equivalent, or in the case of a non-accredited school or college (see Section 2.34.12.020) an Honor Point Average of 3.0 or better or its equivalent, for the upper division studies (approximately the last 60 semester credit hours) or his/her undergraduate course work.

2.34.12.090 Qualified Admission:
 

An applicant may be granted qualified admission to master's degree study upon the written recommendation of the major departmental advisor or the graduate officer of the appropriate school or college and upon presentation of an Honor Point Average between 2.50 and 2.74 (C = 2.0), or in the case of a student who has studied outside the United States, an Honor Point Average between 2.50 and 2.99, for the upper division studies (approximately the last 60 semester credit hours) of his/her undergraduate course work. Upon demonstrated ability to successfully complete graduate-level course work, the qualified admission status may be changed to regular admission status by the appropriate college or school.

2.34.12.100  
 

In the alternative, an applicant may be granted qualified admission to master's degree study with an Honor Point Average below 2.50, or its equivalent in the case of a student who has studied outside the United States, in upper division studies (approximately the last 60 semester credit hours) of his/her undergraduate course if he/she obtains the written recommendation of the major departmental advisor or the graduate officer of the appropriate school or college and demonstrates that, since conferral of his/her baccalaureate degree, he/she has developed academic or extra-scholastic attainments of such a character that show high potential for successful graduate study.

2.34.12.110 Admission for Doctoral Degree Studies
  All applicants for admission to doctoral degree study must meet the requirements of Section 2.34.12.010 through 2.34.12.060.
2.34.12.120  
  An applicant may be admitted to doctoral study upon the recommendation of the major departmental advisor or the graduate officer of the appropriate school or college if the applicant's undergraduate Honor Point Average is 3.0 or above (C = 2.0), or its equivalent in the case of a student who has studied outside the United States, for the upper division (approximately 60 semester credits) of his/her undergraduate course work and if the applicant has completed an undergraduate major or has done substantial specialized work in the proposed doctoral major field.
2.34.12.130  
  An applicant who has not attained an undergraduate Honor Point Average of 3.0 or better, or its equivalent in the case of a student who has studied outside the United States, for his/her upper division course work may be admitted to doctoral degree study upon the recommendation of the major departmental advisor or the graduate officer of the appropriate school or college if he/she has subsequently achieved an Honor Point Average of 3.0 or better, or its equivalent in the case of a student who has studied outside the United States, in substantial graduate course work in his/her proposed doctoral field at a college or university accredited by a national or regional accrediting agency in the United States or an international school of recognized standing.
2.34.12.140 Senior Rule Applicants
  A Wayne State University senior with an upper division Honor Point Average of 3.0 (C = 2.0) or better may, upon recommendation by the major departmental advisor or the graduate officer of the appropriate school or college, be admitted to graduate study in his/her last semester of undergraduate study as a "senior rule admittee." Graduate credit is awarded only for those courses taken in excess of baccalaureate degree requirements. Regular graduate admission status is granted upon proof that the student has completed all requirements for the baccalaureate degree.
2.34.12.150 Non-Degree Admission
  An applicant who wishes to take graduate courses but does not wish to be in a degree program may be admitted to a non-degree status. All applicants for non-degree admission must meet the requirements of Sections 2.34.12.010 through 2.34.12.060.
2.34.12.160  
  Applicants for pre-master status may be admitted in either regular or qualified status according to the provisions in Sections 2.34.12.070 through 2.34.12.100.
2.34.12.170  
  Applicants for post-master status must meet the requirements of Sections 2.34.12.110 through 2.34.12.130.
2.34.12.180  
  Applicants for post-doctoral status who are recommended by the department must possess an earned doctoral degree, and have the recommendation of the graduate officer of the appropriate school or college.
2.34.12.190  
  Permit to register status may be granted on a one-term only basis to applicants with incomplete applications for graduate admission upon presentation of evidence of an earned baccalaureate degree with an acceptable Honor Point Average according to Sections 2.34.12.070 through 2.34.12.100 and Sections 2.34.12.110 through 2.34.12.130.
2.34.12.200  
  Admission to a non-degree status does not obligate the University to accept the applicant in the future for a graduate degree program, nor is there any assurance that credits earned while holding non-degree classification will be acceptable in a degree program if the student later becomes a degree applicant.
2.34.12.210 Graduate Guest Applicants
  Upon presentation of written verification of good standing at the home institution, graduate students from other accredited institutions or international schools of recognized standing are permitted a one-semester admission as a graduate guest student. A departmental or college approval is not required for this admission.
2.34.12.220 Admission for Graduate Certificate Studies
  All applicants for admission to graduate certificate programs must meet the requirements of Sections 2.34.12.010 through 2.34.12.060 and 2.34.12.070 through 2.34.12.100.
2.34.12.230  
  In the case of certain certificate programs, the student must also be concurrently enrolled in or have completed a master's degree program.
2.34.12.240 School/College Admission Standards
  Individual departments, schools, and colleges reserve the right to recommend to the President or his/her designee entrance requirements beyond the minimum graduate admission requirements of the University.
2.34.12.250 Exceptions
  The President or his/her designee is authorized to: a) grant exceptions to any of the above admission categories, under extraordinary circumstances; and b) to establish specific admission standards for degree programs after consultation with the Graduate Council and the school or college.
2.34.12.260 Special Status Admission
  After consultation with the Graduate Council and the school or college establishing the program, the President or his/her designee may designate categories of Special Status admission.
