2.44.01 University Awards

| University recognition is given for outstanding achievement or service to the University, the city, the state, the nation, or to society in general. Such recognition may be in the form of honorary degrees, awards, and citations. | |

| The Board of Governors reserves to itself the right to grant the following recognition based on recommendations from a selection committee, from the President, or upon the Board's initiative:

| Awards shall not bear the name of the Board of Governors without the express approval of the Board. | |
| 2.44.01.040 | |
| The awards referred to in this statute do not include those which are granted on the basis of financial need and are administered by the University Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid. | |
| 2.44.01.050 | Honorary Degree |
| Purpose The honorary degree is the highest honor which the University can confer. It is a recognition granted to a small number of persons who have distinguished themselves as leaders in academia, in the arts, in politics, in government, in business, in industry, or in services to humanity and society. | |

| The degrees to be granted shall normally be limited to the following:

| 2.44.01.070 | Selection and Conferral |
| Nominations may be made in writing by an individual or a group and submitted to the Honorary Degree Committee. The Committee shall be appointed by the President and shall be composed of members of the faculty, the student body, and others the President may wish to appoint. The membership shall serve two-year staggered terms. | |
| 2.44.01.080 | |
| The Committee shall recommend candidates to the President. The President shall then make his/her recommendations to the Board of Governors. | |
| 2.44.01.090 | |
| No more than three honorary degrees shall ordinarily be granted at any one occasion. Members of the Board of Governors, students, faculty, and staff are not eligible for an honorary degree. 1 | |
| 2.44.01.100 | |
| Honorary degrees will normally be conferred only at regularly scheduled commencement exercises. In rare and unusual circumstances the Board may authorize conferral at a special convocation or other suitable occasion. Honorary degrees ordinarily will not be conferred in absentia. | |
| 2.44.01.110 | Distinguished Service/Achievement Award |
| Purpose The Distinguished Service/Achievement Award is the highest award which the University confers, except for the bestowal of an honorary degree. It is a recognition given to individuals who have demonstrated an extraordinary level of service to the University and/or the community or who have demonstrated an extraordinary level of achievement in their own professions or careers. | |

| Nominations may be made in writing by an individual or a group and submitted to the President at least 90 days prior to the date of the event at which the award is to be presented. The President shall then make his/her recommendations to the Board of Governors. | |
| 2.44.01.130 | |
| Members of the Board of Governors, students, faculty, and staff are not eligible for the Distinguished Service/Achievement Award. | |
| 2.44.01.140 | Board of Governors Faculty Recognition Award |
| Purpose An award will be given each year to no more than five members of the regular full-time faculty in recognition of a particular accomplishment or achievement. Each award will consist of a citation, an engraved plaque, and an unrestricted grant in an amount to be set annually. | |

| The award will be based upon a particular work of merit brought to fruition in the 12-month period immediately preceding the award. It should be a single act or event which constituted an outstanding contribution to scholarship and learning such as the publication of a book or other significant writing, a scientific discovery, the exhibition of creative works; a performance, direction or production of a musical or theatrical work, national or international recognition by a learned society, the organization of a symposium or conference of national significance, or a specific major contribution to the community. | |

| Nominations may be submitted in writing to a selection advisory committee appointed by the President. The committee shall be chaired by the Provost or his/her designee and composed of members of the faculty, the student body, and others the President may wish to appoint. The membership shall serve two-year staggered terms. A list of nominees shall be submitted to the President at least 60 days prior to the date on which the awards are to be presented. The President shall report the names of award recipients to the Board of Governors. | |
| 2.44.01.170 | Board of Governors Certificates of Appreciation |
| Purpose Recognition for outstanding service or achievement by students, citizens of the city, state, nation, and society in general. | |
| 2.44.01.180 | Selection |
| Nominations may be made in writing by an individual or a group and submitted to the President at least 60 days prior to the date on which a proposed recognition is to be presented. The President shall submit the recommendation to the Board of Governors for approval. Members of the Board of Governors, faculty, and staff are not eligible for this award. | |
| 2.44.01.190 | Presidential Authority |
| The Board of Governors authorizes the President to approve other forms of University recognition which may be conferred by the University administration, schools, colleges, departments, divisions, and organizations which are affiliated with the University. Approval will be required only for forms of recognition which are both created and awarded by the University and affiliated organizations which bear the name of Wayne State University. | |
| 2.44.01.200 | |
| The President may approve categories of awards and may authorize persons and organizations to select and designate award winners. He/she shall define the recognition, the criteria, the selection process, and the format for such awards. | |
| 2.44.01.210 | |
| The President shall establish a centralized record-keeping procedure for awards given pursuant to this Statute. |
